Chair Based Exercise - for Fitness Instructors

(2 day course including assessment)

This evidenced based course is run in partnership with Later Life Training (LLT) Ltd.  Later Life Training were established in 2003 as an independent sector training agency.  Their mission is to encourage frailer, older people to achieve optimum personal fitness in their later years, thereby reducing falls and disabling injuries, loss of confidence and independence related to physical deterioration. The exercises within this course will help to maintain independence and function.  It is based on research trials held in the UK and funded by the Department of Health.

This module is ideal if you want to specialise and work with older adults then this course will give you the skills to teach chair based exercise in a studio class, community centres and nursing homes. The course covers the ageing process and the effects on bones, joints, heart, lungs and nervous system along with conditions associated with ageing which include osteoporosis, arthritis, stroke and Parkinson's disease and their implications for exercise are discussed. It will give you the knowledge and confidence to teach a range of 17 chair-based exercises aimed at promoting mobility and increasing strength to help aid everyday function of the frailer adult.

The exercises contained within this module will also be helpful if you are teaching a mainstream Older Adult class as it will give you a wide range of seated adaptations for clients who present with a wide range of conditions e.g. osteoporosis.

This 2 day module is designed for fitness instructors, however, we also run a 4 day course for health care professionals wishing to deliver chair-based exercise to frailer older people and who have considerable experience working with older people such as care workers or physiotherapy assistants.  Click here for more information.
